Song of the Week: Gina X Performance – Nice Mover

Gina X Performance – Nice Mover

This 1979 German electropop classic has remained in the playlists of Euro dance DJs since the day its release, but not so well known in the States. A leap ahead of its time in originality and production, Nice Mover has a timeless quality about it. A collaboration between vocalist/performer Gina Kikoine and Zeus B. Held, their first album (of the same name) is packed full of campy/sexy/catchy/electronic/disco tunes like this one.

SOTW – Psychobud: Sighs

Psychobud – Psychobud – Sighs

With a deceptively British new wave sound, this Orange County punk band released a single EP in 1984 that managed to stand the test of time. I was certain this band was defunct & out-of-print, but lo and behold, they do have a MySpace page with their music catalog for sale (digital download).

SOTW: Amon Düül II – Archangel Thunderbird

Amon Duul II

Amon Düül II – Archangel Thunderbird 7″ – Archangel Thunderbird

At the forefront of the early 70’s German psychedelic rock scene were the eclectic collective known as Amon Düül II. Their first few albums became milestones in what was later referred to as Krautrock. This catchy track was originally released as a 7″ single in 1970. It’s a slight departure from their signature sound, featuring vocalist Renate Knaup (who later joined Popol Vuh in 1974).

Song of the Week : Kommunity FK – Something Inside Me Has Died (Remix)

Scream compilation cover

Kommunity FK – The Scream Compilation – Something Inside Me Has Died (Remix) | Download

Kommunity FK formed in 1979 and inspired much of the 80’s deathrock scene in Los Angeles, bringing an American edge to a genre mostly dominated by Brits at the time. This rare track is a remix from their second album, Close One Sad Eye. This version appeared on the vinyl-only 1987 LP Scream – The Compilation, dedicated to the infamous LA deathrock club. Also featured on the collection were a freaky new LA band called “Jane’s Addiction”.

Song of the Week : Tones On Tail – Rain

Tones On Tail - Pop

Tones On Tail: Rain (1984)

It’s been raining a lot here the last week or so in NYC. Here’s one for spending a lazy day indoors… Lush analog synths (sounds like a Roland Juno possibly), dubby drum machine effects, and one of my many favs from their post-Bauhaus/pre-Love And Rockets era…
